FLAPPERS

  • Chris Laxamana opening

EXPLAINING WEIGHT LOSS TO KIDS

  • Vinnie will be doing a kid-friendly show twice a week!
  • Kids wanna know how to look and feel good, too
  • Physical Education in public schools is virtually non-existent now
    • This hurts kids' brains
      • Even taking away recess time is detrimental
  • Exercise is a poor way to lose weight, but is still important for brain function and for muscle mass
  • Losing weight has everything to do with hormones
  • Calorie in / calorie out does not work
    • Compare this to using a car's gas all up and then not refueling -- it simply does not work!
  • Can be hard for kids to get off of all the added sugar, especially in breakfast foods
    • Pretty much all breakfast food marketed towards kids has LOTS of sugar and grains
  • Soft drinks, even diet, will not allow you to lose weight!
    • You must quit the sugar and artificial sugar, even if you are doing everything else right
  • Juice is also straight sugar
    • Once you juice fruit, you lose the fiber and it is literally just a sugar bomb
      • Will cause a crazy glucose spike

: Episode 713 - Vinnie and Anna talk about a la carte gyms, cord-cutting, studies from the 60's that prove high-fat diets don't increase cholesterol and much much more.

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS

PROPAGANDA

  • Propaganda really rules our lives
  • Ex: Michael Jackson called himself the King of Pop until it caught on
    • We see it in politics every day, too
  • It is all the spreading of the word
  • Hence, how Vinnie has called Anna the Best Voice in Podcasting, and now she is!

INFLAMMATION AND DEPRESSION

  • As we know, sugars and grains can cause inflammation
  • There has been a connection between inflammation and depression
  • Important, especially if mental health issues run in your family
  • Susan Masino talks about this

A LA CARTE GYMS

  • Gyms now are very expensive
  • Gyms are probably going to charge based off of what you wanna use at the gym
  • Ex: if you just want to go for the running, you will only pay to use the treadmills
  • A La Carte is the future!
    • Just like how people use cable less now, too, and rather buy Hulu and Netflix, and the like
  • Classes at gyms are also incredibly important for the success of gyms
  • Places like SoulCycle are examples of A La Carte gyms
  • Every big box gym has specified pools, classes, turfs, etc., to try and cater to this new desire

HIGH FAT DIETS & CHOLESTEROL

  • Studies from the '60s even show that high-fat diets don't cause cholesterol to go up
  • More and more studies these days are supporting that evidence
  • The SAD diet was concocted by the sugar industry, and the government was paid to support it
  • People in the NSNG Facebook group have actually showed that their cholesterol went down/got way better since starting the No Sugar No Grains lifestyle
Nov 26, 2016

: Episode 712 - Listener and fan David Sternberg joins Vinnie to talk about his first attempt at the Adirondack 540 and his efforts to remain fat-adapted during the race.

CYCLIST AND LISTENER DAVID

  • Has done a few phone calls with Vinnie in the past
  • Reached out to some of Vinnie's friends (including Tony!)
  • Talked to plenty of folks about NSNG
    • Vinnie offered his services for free, but David and Vinnie still couldn't convince Ernest who was extremely overweight but still a cyclist
      • (exercise is a poor way to lose weight)
        • Must change diet to lose weight, exercise can supplement it but may actually increase weight due to muscle mass
          • Can help with losing inches and fat
  • Folks have to be interested in being thin!

ADIRONDACK 540

  • A gorgeous ultracycling event in New York
    • Did the 408 miler
      • Completed it in 49 hours
  • Remained fat-adapted throughout the race
    • Ate spoonfulls of solid coconut oil
      • He was lucky in that his body had no trouble processing that
        • Likely went through a whole cup of coconut oil
  • Also fueled with "nuggets of energy"
    • Dark chocolate and an assortment of nuts
      • 10g of fat, 4g of sugar
      • Experimented with these for he was slightly worried he wasn't fat adapted to enough
  • Made some PB&J sandwiches because he has bonked in the past and was afraid of bonking
  • He plans on doing one of his races in the future completely fat-adapted!
    • He must play around with it ahead of time a bit more
  • Took his hands a long while to stop hurting
    • His toes were numb for a few days after the race

      • 1971, he and the Zucker brothers moved to LA to try to get on Johnny Carson
        • From Milwaukee
        • The three ended up being huge in the industry!
    • Started The Charlie Foundation

FIGHTING SEIZURES

  • Jim Abrahams' son, Charlie, suffered from seizures
    • Charlie adopted a ketogenic diet, and is seizure free!
    • The Charlie Foundation was set up to help fight epilepsy via a ketogenic diet
  • Check out the Foundation's website here
  • Susan Masino does believe that a ketogenic diet is incredibly beneficial
  • Her goal is to figure out how this diet can help not only epilepsy, but other diseases
    • For example, autism spectrum disorder
  • Used as a treatment for epilepsy for 100 years now
  • Her hypothesis: Ketone-based metabolism increases adenosine which increases brain health and homeostasis
    • In turn, this helps neurological disorders such as epilepsy
  • Healthy metabolism (sufficient amount of ATP) is so vital
    • Ketogenic diet increases ATP produced
  • Your brain can use KETONES instead of sugar for its overall metabolic demand
    • Plus, you have plenty enough sugar in NSNG diet
Nov 23, 2016

  • Started doing research for ketogenic diet in 2010
  • Did research into deep diving seizures and a ketogenic diet

KETO AND WEIGHT LOSS

  • There was a study that came out that said ketogenic diet was not conducive to weight loss
    • Contradicts much of what we know!
  • From the medical community that implements this diet for medical purposes, even they agree that this diet is helpful for weight loss
  • Weight loss is a "side effect" of ketosis
  • Ketosis dampens your appetite
  • When you are eating ketogenic diet, you will feel more sated from less
  • You also stop eating less processed crap which is the stuff that makes you hungrier
  • Exogenous ketones: these are the ketones that you can consume in powder
    • Can help get into ketosis without actually consuming that much of fat
      • Better just to be in real ketosis, consuming lots of fat
    • Exogenous ketones can help some, but others it has no effect
      • Dr. D'Agostino did this experiment with rodents
        • They were eating carb diets, and a good amount did not lose weight even with exogenous ketones
          • Some were able to lose 15% body fat, but this was only in a few
            • They are looking into why that is the case

WHAT IS KETOSIS

  • Ketosis is a state in which your body runs off of stored fat as opposed to sugar intake
    • Even when you are in ketosis, this doesn't mean you can eat unlimited fat and still lose weight
  • KETOACIDOSIS is COMPLETELY different!
    • If you are in dietary ketosis, this has nothing to do with ketoacidosis
    • Causes of ketoacidosis: deep starvation, diabetes, liver disease (alcoholics)
      • This is incredibly dangerous
  • Ketosis is SAFE!
    • Vinnie is in dietary ketosis at all times
    • He does this to keep his cancer away
    • Fat adapted!
      • Your body can run on a little sugar or fat

  • NSNG does NOT equal Ketosis
Nov 14, 2016

: Episode 705 - Anna & Vinnie talk about the Erythritol-based sweetener Swerve, Vinnie's faceplant, Brazilian bush, online macronutrient calculators and more. Plus, a special visit from Vinnie's mom to talk about their family trophy case!

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS

SWERVE

  • Erythritol-based sweeteners are STILL very bad
  • Your body will treat it like sugar
  • Just because it is a 'natural' sweetener, does not make it good for you
  • You do not NEED something sweet -- if you do, have some berries with HWC

VINNIE'S FACEPLANT

  • Vinnie was out on a run and ATE it
  • His face was completely scraped up
    • His teeth hurt for a good while too
  • His elbow also bothered him all night
    14606410_10154604010157170_4530070764133570853_n

VINNIE'S TROPHY CASE

  • Growing up, Vinnie's family had a trophy case
  • Marie tried to take away the trophy case years ago, the family resisted
  • Trophies used to mean something -- you had to work so hard for them
    • The best trophies were front and center
      • Third places trophies were just in the back
  • Now it seems that everyone gets a trophy
    • People are rewarded even for mediocre work

  • He has not booked a call with Vinnie, but YOU can at vinnietortorich.com

ULCERATIVE COLITIS AND CROHN'S

  • Aaron had ulcerative colitis
    • This is just around the colon
  • Crohn's is more widespread, from your mouth all the way down to the exit
  • Aaron uses NSNG to help deal with his stomach/digestive problems
  • He was on some experimental drugs that did work for Crohn's but did not work for ulcerative colitis
    • He essentially just did whatever the doctors told him to
  • Although you can't make Crohn's go away, Vinnie's brother's Crohn's disease has gotten less and less bad
  • NSNG makes it so people with Crohn's don't have to go number 2 10+ times a day
    • Vinnie's bro only has to go 4 times a day, HUGE difference
  • Your body can't digest food the way that a normal, healthy body can because of inflammation
    • Thus, eating inflammatory foods like sugar and grains just makes everything so much worse!
  • NSNG is NOT a cure, just helps
Nov 11, 2016

: Episode 703 -- Eric Sodicoff MD joins Vinnie Tortorich today to talk obesity, gyms, diabetes and why America really is fat.

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS

DR. ERIC SODICOFF

  • Certified Internal Medicine specialist
  • Also an Obesity Specialist!
  • Agrees chiropractors are not real doctors

GYMS & BRO SCIENCE

  • Before big box gyms and bro science, people were thinner
  • Now, thin is not what it meant before
  • Fitness is considered the best way to lose weight -- that is BS
    • Eating badly = weight gain
    • Going to a big fancy gym is no better than getting on the ground and doing crunches for the weight-loss goal
  • Europe does not have the same problem as us, largely because bro science and exercise are BS here
    • It is ALL ABOUT FOOD in reality

OBESITY MEDICINE

  • Low fat does not work!
    • He had trouble answering the question at first about people's weights
      • He learned more about diets, and realized the SAD was so wrong
  • Grelin and leptin are the main factors of obesity, and controlled by what you eat

AMERICA

  •  America is so fat compared to most countries
  • We are stuffing people with processed crap!
  • Sugar and grain is subsidized by the government
    • This is the problem with America!!!
  • People with highest BMI are those who buy subsidized crap
  • In European countries, they eat some carbs, but they eat REAL food and in smaller portions than Americans, too
  • We subsidize wheat, corn, and sugar because it makes America money!

NICOLE RECINE

  • Joins Vinnie from time to time on the Wednesday show
  • She is an RN
  • Training to be a Nurse Practitioner
  • Also a certified diabetes educator!
  • Book a call with her here

NUT RANKINGS

  1. Macadamia nuts are at the top of the list (behind coffee, maybe)
    • Get the raw ones -- have them at Whole Foods for example
    • They are an expensive nut, but a little goes a long way
      • You will only need 5-10
    • Low in protein and low in carbs, but high in fats, low in omega-6 inflammatory fats!
  2.  Walnuts -- easy to acquire
  3. Hazelnuts -- harder to acquire, just as good as walnuts
  4. Pecans -- a little high with omega-6, but low with carbs
  5. Almonds
  6. Cashews should be towards the bottom of your list, even if you put more on the list between almonds and cashews
    • They are super high in carbs for nuts, though
    • They are Vinnie's LIL snack (lol)
  7. Peanuts are bad
  8. Chestnuts are high in carbs
  9. THIS IS JUST A PRELIMINARY LIST -- obviously there are more nuts that are not ranked here
Nov 7, 2016

: Episode 701 - Anna & Vinnie talk about Vinnie's t-shirt, his recent face plant, the difference between glycemic index spike and insulin spike, and more.

 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS

VINNIE'S FACEPLANT

  • Vinnie was on a run and simply ATE IT
  • He took a nice trip and fell right on his face
  • Arms and chin really messed up
  • Must be careful when running, especially trail running

GLYCEMIC INDEX

  • Can be tricky because it is testing foods on a large scale
  • More than just insulin
  • Also, watermelon, for example, is high on the GI but okay to eat because of water content
  • Take note that when you JUICE fruit/veggies, it turns it straight into sugar
    • Loss of starch

Nov 5, 2016

LEARNING ABOUT NUTRITION

  • Hard to know what is right about nutrition
  • They teach you so little in school
  • Pretty much, people get their knowledge by word of mouth
    • Difficult to get a straight answer

MISSING BODY PARTS

  • In Aaron's freshman year of college, he began to have stomach issues and lost lots of weight
    • It took them ages to figure out what was wrong with him
  • Cleveland clinic diagnosed him with ulcerative colitis

    • He was on prednisone for 7 years, lost tons of bone density
  • He was down around 40 lbs at this point
  • They removed his colon because he continued to have issues

    • Nutritionists did nothing for him until he found NSNG

    • Eats a lot of eggs, avocados, steak, olives, olive oil, epic bars, drinks tons of water (2-3L)
Nov 4, 2016

: Episode 699 - NFL player Chris Manhertz, Tight End formerly for the New Orleans Saints, and now for the Carolina Panthers, joins Vinnie to discuss football and becoming an elite athlete.

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSOR

CHRIS MANHERTZ

  • Chris had not played football until he was approached by the Buffalo Bills organization after college
    • He was a basketball player
    • Tried out twice for the Buffalo organization
      • Before the second try out he tried to learn as much as he could and gain the muscle required for the position
  • When this interview was conducted, he was with the Saints and mid-October he signed with the Panthers
  • It has been a long journey and process to get where he is today, playing pro football just a couple years out of college
  • He is now straight muscle, at 255, 6'6"
    • Before this he was super lean as a basketball player
  • His parents let him play what he wanted to play
  • Chris eats all in moderation
    • "If you are going to eat something you shouldn't be eating, it's all in moderation"
      • He doesn't eat poorly too often
      • He believes in LIL!
  • Chris acknowledges that when he is older he can likely not eat the way he eats now
    • Eventually, he realizes he will have to change his diet to reflect his age and lack of crazy calorie burning
  • Football is "not a career, it's a job"
  • Chris got a master's in sports administration, so he believes this will help him in the long run

ELITE ATHLETE

  • When Chris had to gain the extra weight to be up to par for his position, he was on a high protein diet
  • He has no extra fat on him, just 255 lbs of muscle
  • Hit the weight room, kept running
  • Did combine work, worked on footwork, getting quicker and having better acceleration
    • Chris knew if he couldn't do well at the combine, he wouldn't get drafted
      • Football can be taught, being fast and such is not exactly the same, although it does require lots of work
  • Combine requires running and weight lifting
  • Combine is the first impression for an organization
    • You trained so hard, you must show it here

THE FIRST HIT

  • Chris spent a year on the sideline, which mentally prepared him to get hit as he watched it happen all the time
  • The day Chris got hit hard for the first time, he was mentally prepared
  • Not just about taking the hit, also about giving the hit
  • Every hit is like a car accident
  • Now, if you get hit too hard or hurt your head, you get taken out
    • MUCH better protocals to avoid brain damage

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSOR

  • Pure Vitamin Club

  • She is a nurse, training to be an RN
  • Nicole is also very good at interpreting numbers regarding cholesterol and the like
  • Also, she is beautiful so that's a plus!
  • You can book a phone call with her here!

GOOD OILS AND FATS

  • People on Twitter keep asking about oils
  • Some oils are better than others, some should not be consumed at all
  • Really, Nicole does not believe other oils should be used other than Olive Oil
  • Coconut oil is also good, more for if you are cooking or sauteing
  • All the other oils really are more inflammatory, full of poly-unsaturated fats, takes more to process them
  • 2 Omega 6: 1 Omega 3 is a good ratio to keep in your diet
    • Standard American diet can be 25 Omega 6: 1 Omega 3
    • Omega 6 fatty acids not very great, and are found in other vegetable oils other than olive oil and coconut
  • Avocado oil is okay, but OLIVE OIL is better (and tastes better)
    • Eat an Avocado if you want, just don't use the oil
  • PS- Saturated Fats are GOOD for you
