Temperatures can get up to 120 degrees during the 135 mile Badwater Race and Tony Portera has run it seven times, finishing five. He joins the podcast with fellow runners Brian, Jason and Andrea, who is running this year’s Badwater as well.  They discuss the race, crewing, NSNG and how God fits into all of this, all while having a great time with lots of laughs.

Badwater is grueling

  • The first 44 miles will make you or break you

Running, NSNG and God

  • Brian lost 25 lbs with NSNG
  • Describe running as a religious experience
  • As close to God as you can get without dying
  • You never finish the race as the same person you started -- you always learn something new about yourself

Tony's NSNG Experience

  • Tony was up to 208 lbs at 5’9”
  • Got down to 180 lbs by exercising but got stuck
  • Prime example of how exercise is a poor way to loose weight

  • On NSNG, Tony had more energy, slept better, trained better, ran better and the weight started coming off
  • Tony ran Badwater 2014 at 148 lbs

Nikki Kimball was a cross-country skier by the time she was three years old. She did biathlons, which is a combination of cross-country skiing and shooting. She also loves to run. In 2004, she signed up for one of the toughest races in the ultraworld, the Western States 100. She not only ran the 100 miles, but she was the first woman in and won the whole thing. She won it again in 2006 and 2007. This year, she won the women's division of Marathon de Sables which is known as the “toughest footrace on earth."

Nikki is an Incredible Athlete

  • Won the Western States 100 three times
  • Won the Marathon de Sables
  • Never did a staged race in the desert before
  • Carried all her food, sleep gear and medical supplies for 7 days on her back

What She Eats

  • Eats no pasta and doesn't carbo load
  • When she was first starting out, was told by a doctor that American athletes were fat because they ate too much fat
  • She was training around 15 hours a week of hard aerobics and was gaining weight eating a high carb diet
  • Wound up undernourished and hungry and turned to sugar, carbs and grains
  • Realized she had to get fat adapted to keep up her energy

Robert "Bertie" Portal is a British actor and ultra-athlete. He is known for his work in movies, television, theater and radio. He can be seen in "The King's Speech" and "Iron Lady" and is in the soon to be released movie "Mr. Turner". Vinnie and Bertie Portal discuss his endurance event of rowing across the Atlantic Ocean.

How it Started

  • Bertie bought an ocean endurance boat that is self-righting
  • Doing it for the charity Facing the World, which helps children with facial deformities in third world countries
  • Wanted to conquer his fear of open water
  • Had no rowing experience
  • Wanted to see how he handled potentially lethal situation

Training

  • Trained in small cellar with rowing machine in pitch dark for 12 hours
  • Wanted to make himself physically and mentally stronger
  • Only had banana and a bottle of water during training
  • Also trained at a gym on a rowing maching at level 12 for 2 hours
  • So much of endurance is mental
  • Rowed with partner James Cash for 24 hrs as part of training

What Bertie is Doing Now

  • Still working for "Facing the World" Charity
  • Just came back from Marathon des Sables
  • It is a 6 day event where you do a marathon everyday
  • In the middle of the week you do 2 marathons in a row
  • No crew. Carry own water
  • Bertie tells Vinnie he is not a natural athlete
  • Next Bertie is working on swimming the English Channel

Then Vinnie and Anna talk to the hilarious Bevan McKinnon about winning competitions on a high-fat, low carbohydrate diet, triathlon, and metabolic efficiency.

Bevan's bio:

Bevan McKinnon is an Elite level Triathlete, Professional Triathlon Coach and Host on the podcast, Fitter Radio. He’s competed at World Champs for Olympic, Long Course and Ironman distances. He has numerous top 10 placings in international Iron distance triathlons including 2 podium finishes and most recently won the 2014 Challenge Wanaka Half Ironman and was the overall age group race winner at the 2014 Ironman New Zealand.

Bevan is also an advocate of the LCHF diet. He first converted to this way of eating when researching metabolic efficiency and fat adaptation for endurance athletes. Having previously eaten a traditional high carbohydrate athletic diet and always struggled to reach optimal body composition with occasionally suffering from colon inflammation he changed to the LCHF lifestyle. In 2014 at 43 years of age he not only won the Challenge Wanaka Half Ironman by over 6 minutes but also won the overall age group race at Ironman New Zealand by over 15 mins and placed 9th Overall.  Bevan beat a host of pro athletes at this race coming home in a time of 9hrs and 55 seconds

He is also the founder and co-host of Fitter Radio. The Fitter Radio podcast covers the sports of triathlon, swimming, cycling and running including training, whole food nutrition information and basically all things endurance!

Dean Lorey is a veteran of the film and television industry.  On the big screen, he wrote Major Payne, Friday the 13th Part 9: Jason Goes To Hell and many others.  For television, he wrote and produced Arrested Development, My Wife and Kids and The Crazy Ones. Dean also co-wrote the book FITNESS CONFIDENTIAL with Vinnie.
