PUTTING LIFE INTO LIVING

  • Just don't use this as an excuse to change your lifestyle!
  • You can have a "cheat" day every once in awhile, but this implies dietary restrictions beyond sugars and grains and can take people off the tracks
    • After a cheat day, you will wake up bloated, starving, and wanting to cheat more
      • Must be careful!
      • Eventually, you get over it. Then you have a good day or even a few, but then it's your cheat day again and then you start all over. That is why you must be careful with having too many cheat days.
    • Having a "cheat" day once a week can be a slippery slope
    • That is why we say "Life into Living" instead
      • It isn't a permission slip for a day, rather than maybe just ONE slice of cake every once in awhile

    • Well over 500 lbs
  • He has tried everything to lose weight but is derailed 
    • He wants to make life the reason he SHOULD lose weight, but instead uses life as an excuse to eat what he wants 
    • The greatest he ever felt, however, was when he started NSNG
      • lost 75lbs in one month
        • went about 6 mos and lost a bunch of weight 
          • He didn't know how to handle keeping the weight off/handling his success 
    • Once work got more stressful, he didn't keep up packing his meals, etc.
      • Instead he ordered food, went to restaurants, etc.
        • Once he got laid off, it made it even harder to get back on track 

GETTING DERAILED FROM NSNG

  • It is easy to get derailed when you are dealing with life
  • Can be grief, can be a few holiday meals, can be lots of work that gets you off of NSNG and makes it hard to get back on 
  • If you do go off course, just get back on the next meal you're able to! 
  • It is hard to approach the emotional side of it
    • NSNG can make you feel better, too
    • It's okay to go off for awhile to deal with your feelings, but eventually your body will want to go back to NSNG
      • Try to get back on as soon as possible -- once you dive back in, you CAN succeed!

HOW DOES FRUIT PLAY A ROLE IN NSNG?

  • Because Anne had a sugar addiction, she wants to be careful about eating too much fruit
    • In the morning, Anne will have mixed berries with chia seeds, coconut and some almond milk and eat that with egg/vegetable dish 
    • For lunch Anne will have some meat and salad without fruit
    • At night, Anne will have some apple and grapes with almond butter, etc.
  • Anne hasn't broken the cycle but she is close 
    • Her body is still using fruit to bridge the sugar gap
      • She needs to break the fruit cycle then she can go back to fruit later on once the "hanger" after dinner stops 
        • Sugar causes our body to release grelin which makes our feelings of hunger come back
    • Eventually, once Anne's body becomes more fat adapted (this is not the same as in ketosis), fruit can be re-introduced without the same effects
  • Harder to become fat adapted while eating fruit
    • Becoming fat adapted can take anywhere from 15-60 days
      • You won't be hangry anymore
        • No pain and no pangs 
  • Better to stay away from the more tropical fruits
    • Berries are the best!! Lowest Glycemic Index 

WHAT ABOUT LACTOSE?

  • Everyone is different
  • You have to test it, and if you plateau and/or gain weight while drinking milk nd eating lots of yogurt, try cutting it out and seeing what works
  • You have to tweak your body to buy into ketone bodies
  • Once your body figures everything out, you can re-introduce, etc.

WHAT HAPPENED IN INDIA

  • First day they had a press conference
  • Next day was the hike
    • This hike was incredibly intense, harder than really steep American mountains
    • Hundreds of people hiking across crazy terrain, over these root bridges 
    • Vinnie had to get sugar in him to undo the bonk
      • Dehydration is harder to undo than the bonk
      • Andy had a cramp when he took in the sugar, and the cramp spread to both of his legs in every muscle 
        • Villagers helped massage Andy as he became more and more afraid which calmed him down 
    • INCREDIBLY magical, beautiful place and the villagers were lovely 
  • Were brought to India by the great Terun Bajaj 
    • Attended his twin brother's wedding
  • Background noise in this podcast is composed of horns that constantly blow in India
  •  At 5:30am, Andy was woken up by amplified chanting 
    • It is a very religious/spiritual place 
  • Completely different culturally 
    • Ex: incense burning 
  • Day after this podcast was recorded, they went to New Delhi for Vinnie to go give more speeches

THE TWITTER MISUNDERSTANDING

  • Due to an incorrect show note and a misquote, many thought Vinnie was spreading incorrect information about Type 1 diabetes
  • Vinnie tried to reach out to everyone who was upset to explain it was a miscommunication, and an incorrect note written by one of his employees (everybody makes mistakes once in awhile!)
  • Vinnie understands what Type 1 diabetes is and is looking to become even MORE educated on the subject 
    • Three of his good friends and NSNG folks have Type 1 and they realized this must have just been a misunderstanding

  • Vinnie wants to help those with diabetes and help educate on the difference between Type 1 and Type 2
    • Vinnie believes they should not have the same name
    • The American Girl Doll article, Vinnie was referencing type 2 Diabetes which often comes about due to obesity and poor eating, and was not trying to reference anyone with Type 1 or offend anyone with Type 1 
  • Vinnie and Anna try to help people control auto-immune disorders like Celiac and Type 1 through a healthy lifestyle! 
  • Vinnie wants to right his wrongs -- even his accidental wrongs 
  • Type 1 -- pancreatic cells cannot produce little or no insulin

    • Type 1 diabetes is not about diet or obesity 
      • You can be diagnosed at any age 
    • Type 1 diabetes does not discriminate 
  • People get mixed up between 1 and 2 which is why they shouldn't have the same name
  • Dan has a 7 year old who was diagnosed with Type 1 at age 5
    • She eats healthier than most adults, runs, swims, has an American Girl Doll with the diabetes kit which she LOVES
      • Dan recognizes this is a marketing ploy but if it helps kids get through the hardship of having this disease, ultimately it is good! 
    • Dan and his daughter often on TV sees Type 2 diabetes drugs advertisements 
      • His daughter doesn't understand why she can't take those medications because the two types of diabetes which are SO DIFFERENT are often associated together due to their similar names and dealings with sugar 
  • Parents rightfully so become very protective over their kids due to the ignorance among many people concerning Type 1 and Type 2 
  • Type 2 is also fairly complex -- not everyone with type 2 is obese and some people are fit, there can be a genetic link there as well 
  • Type 1 diabetes is more than just eating the right foods -- pumps are required and so many factors go into blood sugar level
    • Insulin is a drug that can kill you so when treating folks with type 1, you must be careful to dose the right amount 
    • Low blood sugar over a prolonged period of time can cause a person/child to be non-responsive 
    • Technology has allowed people like Carolyn and Dan to monitor blood sugar levels on cell phones, but in the US only 11% of people have access to this technology so there is a lot of waking up in the middle of the night, etc. 
    • For young children, requires parental or medical intervention even when kids are not in front of them

ARTICLE ON LOSING WEIGHT

  • There was an article that discussed whether brisk walking or working out was a better way to lose weight
    • In part, depends on what you do at the gym
  • They did not even touch on diet
    • Exercise is a poor way to lose weight!

WALKING OR WEIGHTLIFTING TO LOSE WEIGHT

  • Bottom line is, having a good diet is necessary ALSO to lose weight 
  • Walking, you might burn more fat calories and maybe make it to zone 2 
    • Trying to keep up with Andy will make you lose 300 calories
      • However if you go eat a bag of M&Ms after, you’ve negated the calories you’ve lost
      • Calorie in calorie out doesn’t work so that is why exercise doesn’t work as well as diet to lose weight 
    • Walking is good and heart healthy
  • In your 30s, you start to lose pounds of muscle, so weightlifting can be good to help this 
  • Depending on what the weightlifting is, you may burn more fat calories
  • At the end of the day, neither will really MAKE you lose weight 
    • Do both to stay healthy and help weight loss

        • Different for everyone but once you become more fat adapted, you will need even less 
  • Zach Bitter, who just set another big record, trickles sugar to help him through 
  • UCAN works well for this 
    • Vinnie is a fan of plain UCAN and mixes it with a TINY bit of MCT oil 
    • Shouldn't give you any inflammation 
    • The product is derived from grain (corn), which is why Vinnie will not let UCAN be a sponsor

  • Came to the impromptu fan meet up in LA with his wife from NorCal
  • He is a long haul trucker 
  • John had a great constructive weekend at the meet up
    • He enjoyed it very much and he and his wife will attend the next one

WHAT SHOULD THE HABITUAL SNACKER DO?

  • John in the beginning found it difficult not to snack when he was watching tv, or was in the truck, etc.
  • One day, Vinnie got pork rinds as his long-drive snack
    • He realized he didn't have to eat the whole bag, and that high fat made him feel better
    • He realized raw nuts were better because you aren't snacking the WHOLE time and they aren't so bad for you!
  • John found if he had something to put in his hand like a cup of coffee in front of him, he wouldn't go to the fridge to get a snack
