  • When Lea started NSNG, about a year ago, she went into ketosis easily
  • But then she started getting carb-phobic
  • She knows the benefits of ketosis...for example, it improves brain function
  • What are the right foods to eat?

VINNIE’S THOUGHTS ON KETOSIS AND NSNG

  • He doesn’t believe you have to be in ketosis to lose weight...it is not a magic bullet
  • You can eat lots of veggies and berries and still go into ketosis
  • Don’t be carb-phobic..just cut out sugar and grains
  • If you are eating real foods, like leafy greens, carbs are not a problem

MARK’S QUESTION ABOUT RUNNING

  • He has been a long-distance runner for 20-30 years and wants to get faster...less than 20 mins for a 5K
  • If you go out to fast, you get exhausted and if you don’t go out fast enough you won’t have a good time
  • What can he do to build up power to be able to improve his time by 30 seconds?
  • Is weight training effective?

WHAT WORKS

  • Varying speeds, for example go from zone 2 to a spring...interval training...is very effective
  • Good to gym exercise...lunge and squats will add power to your legs
  • But to go faster, find a program like Joe Friel’s 5K training routine
  • Gotta run hard and stay relaxed

  • Consumers assume vitamins packaged in amber-glass bottles to be a superior product
  • Seems medicinal...doctors used to put medicine in tinted bottles to shield it from light and deterioration
  • For certain products, like salmon oil, it makes a difference

Vinnie is very happy to have the amazing, beautiful and talented Serena Scott Thomas on to talk to her about her 50 mile run. She is now officially an ultra-runner!  Serena ran the Avalon 50 on Catalina Island.  Not only did she finish in 11 hours and 40 minutes but she did it for a really good cause. She raised over $5,000 for InSitu Foundation which trains rescue dogs to detect early stage cancer by smell. They also discuss Serena’s movie,  Inherent Vice, which is up for an Independent Spirit Award.  Listen in as Vinnie tries to speak with a British accent...

THE DAY OF THE RACE

  • Serena felt terrified...everyone told her how difficult your first 50 mile race is
  • There was 7,000 feet of climbing
  • The race started 5 am Saturday morning and all was well as the sun came up
  • It started to drizzle but by 20 miles the rain started coming down
  • Serena didn’t have her raincoat and she got wet and cold

DURING THE RACE

  • Mud was clay and incredibly slippery
  • It was so muddy and slippery, couldn’t do downhill
  • It was miserable...besides being cold and wet, her running shoes were not “grippy” enough
  • Mud was very deep and sticking to her shoes

WHAT SHE LEARNED

  • At about 40 miles, Serena had a low moment and stopped at Aid Station because she needed something to eat with fat in it.
  • She had gone through her nuts
  • The only things available were sugary things like jelly beans, M&M’s and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches 
  • She needed to have more fatty foods with her

DIET THE DAY OF THE RACE

  • Usually Serena doesn’t eat in the morning...just coffee with heavy cream and a handful of nuts
  • The day of the race, she had a hard-boiled egg, 1/2 apple and full-fat yogurt
  • She did some sugar trickle
  • Serena wished she had some nuts, some cheese, some olives and something hot to drink

WHY VINNIE DOESN’T LIKE “THE BIGGEST LOSER”

  • The show seeks people that are so desperate, they will do anything to lose weight
  • They are put through brutal workouts and starvation diets
  • Contestants are screamed at and put in unsafe situations
  • They call each other “Losers” and are worked out to the point of vomiting or collapsing

THE SHOW IS A FAT-SHAMING DISASTER...AND PEOPLE LOVE IT

  • 7,000,000 people watch each week
  • 200,000 people audition each season
  • 2/3’s of this country is overweight or obese; so there’s always interest in losing weight
  • No one cares that this is not a sustainable lifestyle

WHAT THE CONTESTANTS ARE PUT THROUGH

  • They are taken to the Gillette Ranch in Calabasas where they are locked in their rooms and their cell phones and computers are taken for 24 hours.
  • Many contestants believe they were bugged.
  • Their first workout is 4 hours long and they were subjected to workouts that lasted from 5-8 hours without a break
  • Calories were restricted to less than 1,000 per day and all food had to be approved by a trainer

VINNIE CHALLENGES JILLIAN MICHAELS

  • In 2014, Jillian quits the show saying she was deeply concerned about the show’s poor care of the contestants.
  • Vinnie goes on a rant...”Now she’s concerned? Why wasn’t she concerned 16 seasons ago? No...she had to wait until she became more famous than the show!”
