GENDER IDENTITY

  • Vinnie is supportive of people making their own decision about their gender identity
  • However, he was just surprised that a child that young could realize their feelings regarding that
  • Andy goes on to explain how that works
    • He just had this instinctual feeling that he was not attracted to girls
      • Didn't have to do with the sexual mechanics 
  • Kids figure this out at their own pace
    • Some kids can figure out what their comfortable identity is at 5, others at 10 or 11 or older
  • Sexual identity is VERY different from something like changing food preference 
  • Vinnie is just wondering where all this was when he was a kid 
    • Andy believes the difference now is children are less shamed and less afraid to share their feelings
  • Caitlyn Jenner has had a role in changing the public's idea of gender identity

PURE, WHITE, AND DEADLY

  • Dr. Yudkin
  • 1972, book written about the dangers of sugar
  • Cool thing is back in the early '60s there was a war between Dr. John Yudkin and Ancel Keys
    • Ancel argued yes carbs, Yudkin argued sugar and carbs are bad
    • K ration in war is still based off of Keys
    • Keys only pushed sugar because it helped his wallet
      • Keys himself did not eat high carbs 
        • "cereal is for the little people"
  • Sounded the alarm back in the 70s
  • Check out interesting article and also Lustig's speech here! 
  • Yudkin was ridiculed and shamed, but posthumously it is making a comeback 
  • Gladiators would stuff themselves with grains to get a layer of fat so when they fought they had something to protect them 

VIDEO WE LIKE: 

NSNG COFFEE

  • Your body treats fake sweeteners and honey and stevia the same as it does all sugar
    • Agave syrup is sugar!!! 
    • Causes a reaction in your liver
  • Vinnie puts one of three things in his coffee:
    • Coconut oil, for a little extra energy 
    • HWC or some whole milk
    • A little bit of kerrygold butter 
  • Coffee in and of itself is a flavor -- if you don't like how it tastes, then don't drink it
    • "Just put some coffee in your coffee"
    • Remains bitter but eventually once you stop eating sugar and processed crap it won't be so bitter
    • Same goes with all 'bitter' things -- your taste buds will change and you'll miss out on less
      • The fact that sugar changes your tastebuds is disconcerting enough

CHILDREN'S LUNCHES 

  • Anna would rather see you pack a sandwich with hard boiled eggs and fresh veggies and such than something like a Lunchable 
    • So processed and chemical-y
  • At the very least, nothing should be a processed food in a package
  • Carrots, cucumbers, nuts, apples, peanut butter, eggs, etc. 
  • Just because food is from somewhere with healthy options doesn't mean it is healthy
  • Kids having a knowing within them if you start to awaken it

  • Heard about Vinnie via the Carolla effect
    • Has been really great for Vinnie -- he loves Adam!!! 
  • Since finding Vinnie in October, John got on the NSNG train and went really strict, then fell off the wagon, and got back on after the New Year
    • Since then, he has lost 60lbs
    • This is the first diet change that he has enjoyed
      • It has become a new lifestyle for him -- not like any other 'diet' he has been on

  • Dancers have very little upper body strength
  • Many pop stars also apply
  • Vinnie has trained dancers who have had to weight train
    • Especially as they age 

WEIGHT TRAINING

  • Fan of Vinnie wanted to know how many sets/reps to achieve a certain 'deal'
  • Wanted to know about how to add chest muscle
    • Are chest flies worth it vs bench press? 
      • If you have a lot of time, use flies to complement bench press
        • If you strictly want to add muscle meat, do bench press then incline press 
        • Flies are worth it if you have time to do it
      • Bang for your buck comes from presses 
  • Vinnie does bicep curls with 5/10/15lb weights
    • He is rehabbing and doesn't want to press it
    • He will not continue once he gets back to 30/40/50lbs
      • Then, he will do pull ups etc. 
      • Vinnie doesn't like what curl biceps look like
        • Too Mark Wahlberg for his taste 
          • real boobs vs. fake boobs
          • Curl biceps look too done 
      • Vinnie is also a fan of lat pulls
        • Use a band attached to the top of your door if you don't have anything else
        • Pull down to your clavicle
  • Vinnie likes a little extra tricep 
  • A crossfit body is a good body, but lots of people get hurt doing crossfit because of bad instruction

DR. NORMAN ROSENTHAL

TRANSCENDENTAL MEDITATION

  • Different types of meditation and they really make a difference
    • Two popular forms: Mindfulness vs Transcendental
      • Mindfulness you are supposed to focus on something, whereas in TM you are given a mantra and you are told to access it in automatic way
  • Transcendental Meditation - not specifically trying to focus hard
    • Once you learn, it becomes nearly automatic and natural and you can channel it easily and use it to relax
  • TM's goal is to move you into a different state of consciousness
    • Supposed to reach a 'super mind'
    • Maharishi: “The goal of the Transcendental Meditation technique is the state of enlightenment. This means we experience that inner calmness, that quiet state of least excitation, even when we are dynamically busy.”
  • Allows one to channel calmness and peace, especially when tired
  • People such as Seinfeld, and even Vinnie's friend, Don Coddington, practice TM with fantastic results

  • Woman buys muffin, takes off the holder cupcake-paper part, puts it back in bakery bag 
  • Takes outside of bag and begins to crush muffin on the inside 
  • Next, she would drink some frappucino and shake some muffin crumbs into her mouth to have both the drink and the food at the same time 
  • The whole family was morbidly obese

"YES, BUT…"

  • People will ask for advice then negate the advice given
  • Some people see this as a game
  • Vinnie and Anna meet many yes butters
  • If you are asking for advice, accept graciously even if you don't implement the advice
  • Woman was told that she should go off of dairy by 
    • Going through her grieving of going off sugars, grains, and dairy 
      • If you grieve as much as she did, it must be an addiction 
  • Also, be responsible enough to make your own decisions and do your own research
  • Woman says Anna's book is "feeding lies" because this woman can't eat dairy and Anna's book has dairy in recipes therefore this woman will not be "Eating Happy"

DIABESITY

  • Study found that diabetics, even those who are slightly obese, can benefit from weight loss surgery
    • Complete crap
    • This "study" was printed by the Associated Press and promoted by American Diabetes Association, International Diabetes Federation, and 43 other groups, in the Diabetes Journal 
  • It's your BRAIN that has the problem so cutting your stomach out is ridiculous 
    • Problems do not go away because you have to teach your brain what it wants and you need to learn to control your hormones
        • For diabetics this is even more complicated and involves seeing a doctor and taking prescribed drugs and insulin etc.
        • Diabetes cannot be "cured" by weight loss surgery

PAUL STANSEL

  • Has been listening to the show and been NSNG since Vinnie's appearance on Rich Roll's podcast
  • Was a vegan at that time
  • Has read the book, has been NSNG
  • 3 years ago he dropped from 287 (5'7.5") down to 215
    • Ran a couple marathons and tore some cartilage in his ankle, spent a year with doctors afterwards
    • Had surgery a year and a half ago and in the meantime couldn't run and ate his misery away
    • Gained back 70 lbs and was in bad shape mentally and physically
  • Last year his wife ran the Boston Marathon and he committed himself to getting back on the wagon and back in marathon shape
  • Has been NSNG again since September/October 2015
  • Is currently down to single digit 200s for the first time since 1998
  • Still working to achieve his goal weight

MENTAL TOUGHNESS

  • Paul knows physically that he can run the marathon, but he is getting in his own head
  • One has to be confident in one's training
  • It is hard to get out of your own head and just trust in the process
  • This happens for NSNG too
    • Must really commit and trust it
  • The fight between physical and mental
    • He still feels heavy and that is messing with his idea of his ability to run
  • Tough to see pictures of oneself and see the weight loss if one hasn't reached goal weight
    • Be proud of what you've accomplished so far!
    • Also see how you feel, and if you feel better, that's a great thing too
  • Rewire ones brain and rejigger motivation
    • Always have a goal but take time in reaching it

MENTAL ILLNESS

  • Many kids develop symptoms in adolescence but are not getting to professionals
    • Could be ignorance, money, bad parenting, etc. 
  • One can see the effect of mental illness in the horrible tragedies such as Sandy Hook and Aurora and Adam Lanza 
  • Some medications can exacerbate intense suicidal and homicidal thoughts 

TECHNOLOGY

  • Kids, including Tallulah, are all on many different forms of media at one time 
  • Many kids feel like they can't walk away from a device
  • Hard for parents to react to this when their kids are otherwise doing very well
  • It can be an addiction, though, and really become an issue

NUTRITION

  • It's an issue when young children start to restrict their food intake
  • Not getting enough cholesterol or fatty acids 
  • Good nutrition helps one to contain good dopamine and serotonin and other necessary hormonal levels

BEANS

  • A legume
  • Fair amount of carbs in beans
  • When starting out NSNG, maybe better to avoid
  • Vinnie will still eat beans from time to time
    • ex: at chipotle in a bowl without rice 
  • Baked beans have lots of sugar -- make sure it is JUST beans in your beans
  • Feel free to eat every once in awhile!

  • Flaxseeds high in omega 3
    • Technically gluten free and paleo!
    • Good in moderation, just like all other seeds

TRANSITIONING TO NSNG

  • Can be mentally challenging to convince oneself to eat a lot of fat
  • Calorie restricting is harmful to your body and your mind; why the transition can be difficult
  • Best to go cold turkey on NSNG but if you must transition, try to do so healthily
  • Keto-flu normal at first for a few days
  • Make sure you are eating enough -- snacking on nuts or olives is good!

DETOX

  • Detoxes are scams
    • These programs just want your money 
    • They are NOT good for your health 
  • There are no toxins in your body that your body cannot get rid of on its own
    • If there ARE, you should be going to the ER, NOT simply drinking juice for a week
  • You can stop putting crap into your body by doing NSNG, but your liver and kidneys will be getting rid of toxins on their own 
  • CO2 is a toxin, and it comes out when you BREATHE
  • If you are breathing, sweating, defecating, and urinating, you are doing just fine in regards to toxins
