: Episode 663 - Andy and Vinnie talk about fitness for older men, the over 50 crowd...

  • However, they both love Janis Joplin

    • with Jim Morrison whom Andy loves, but Vinnie doesn't

  • Both think she is raw and honest and wonderful

FITNESS FOR OLDER MEN

  • Listener Mark asked about fitness for men 50 and above
    • He maintains a very low body fat %, but sometimes finds he works out as a 25 year old and is sore the next day
  • What is an appropriate fitness regiment for older men?
  • When you get older, you have to warm into the harder workouts and heavier weights 
  • For weightlifting, Vinnie (age 53) has to be careful regarding his back
    • When he does leg presses and squats, he will start by warming up for 15 minutes on a rower
      • Then he will stretch for 15-30 minutes depending on how tight or sore he is
        • Then he will start with very light squats and work his way up 
        • Will deadlift after he is warmed up with squats
  • Key is ramping up very slowly
    • Allow yourself more time for your workout as you get older for more warming and stretching
  • You can go as heavy as you want, but only if you build up to it
  • If you are extra sore, take it easy for a day!
  • Vinnie has to take it easy for his rehabbing shoulder as far as upper-body workouts go
  • He tells his older clients to start low and warm for upper-body workouts 
  • When it comes to aerobic activity, aerobic capacity can remain very high for a long time even if your max isn't what it used to be
  • Know yourself, prepare, and do not rush!
    • Same for Andy and his hiking
      • Same for most people
        • If Andy brings water, goes slow, and brings some NSNG salty snacks with shoes that are a bit more roomy, he is good to go indeterminately

    • Followed Gina's progress and looked into NSNG
  • Read Vinnie's book, Fitness Confidential, and found it made sense and began NSNG
  • Started just about a month ago
  • Suffered a bad concussion back in April, was told to cut out sugar and caffeine
  • Started eating meat when she started NSNG
  • Loves reading about nutrition but has trouble with convoluting information
  • Wants to lose about 25 lbs 

LOSING INCHES

  • Kristi has lost some girth both in her waist and arms
    • Her seat belts are a little looser
  • Hasn't lost a pound
  • Body has not been used to some of these nutrients due to veganism
    • Her body is likely grabbing at the nutrients it is newly receiving 
  • She also definitely feels less hungry in general eating this way 
  • She is eating about 400-600 more calories a day, and not gaining weight, but losing inches
    • This is a win!!!
  • Keep on it and lbs will start to come off
  • Be happy with the results you have at first, even if they are not immediately weight loss
    • Feeling better and eating more without gaining weight is a win
  • Vinnie advises Kristi to cut back slightly on the fat, add a bit more proteins and such and the weight will come off

  • Parts of this movie are kind of coming true!
  • In the movie, the watrer fountains spew gatorade
  • Nobody drinks water
  • Sugary takes over, which is happening in real life too
  • Similar to questions Vinnie gets on Twitter
    • People always asking what they can drink
  • DRINK WATER, PEOPLE!
  • People more and more are relying on sugary drinks instead of water
  • Andy did drink lots of sugary drinks when he was young, but Vinnie only had them as a treat (Coke)
    • The Coke sat hidden outside on the porch, his family did not have soda in the main fridge, nor did Andy's although he drank them more
    • Coke in Vinnie's house was largely there for company 
    • Vinnie would only get a Coke on special celebrations or at the barber shop
      • Vinnie was more interesting in watching the Coke come out of the vending machine
  • In Vinnie's world there is tea, coffee, water, and soda water, and whiskey or scotch 
    • You don't need sugar in coffee -- eat NSNG and your coffee will start tasking sweeter!
  • Andy used to be addicted to soda and used to ALWAYS put artificial sweeteners in his coffee
    • When he gave it all up, he did not like the taste
    • NOW on NSNG he likes it so much more without the chemicals and can really taste the good flavor of the coffee
  • Starbucks is selling poison and tries to hide sugar wherever they can in their drinks
    • Careful when you order that they aren't sneaking sugar

  • Completely confusing article by folks who don't really understand ANY of the science behind nutrition
  • "Stay in your calorie target-- then eat whatever you'd like!"
    • Literally saying you can eat donuts and as long as you stay in your range its okay
  • They don't know the difference between calories and macros
  • The website said Anna should have 52% protein and 59% fat and -11g carbs 
    • WHAT???
    • Also how does this make sense with anything they just said about donuts?

SOME 101

  • We have old 101 podcasts if you subscribe
  • Additionally, if you book a call with Vinnie he can help you further!
  • Grelin, leptin, insulin are what controls your weight and are controlled by the amount of carbs you eat
  • When we eat sugar and grains, our bodies release different levels grelin and leptin and insulin 
  • Grelin - the hormone that causes you to want to eat
    • The levels of this actually INCREASE when you eat high carbs 
  • Leptin - the hormone that tells your body you are full
    • "safety hormone"
      • Keeps your hunger in check
    • Eating carbs messes with this
  • Insulin messes with the sugar levels in your blood and muscles, and we get all the insulin we need from veggies and such 
    • Unless, of course, you have an insulin issue

    • Those who don't listen can't be convinced easily 
  • People will always insist it is heavy exercise
    • Vinnie hardly ever does anything to keep his muscles showing (like ab work)
      • He does nothing special to be lean and in shape
    • If you eat properly, veggies, meats, oils, you will look like the "animal" we were meant to be

REAL FOOD FAKE FOOD

  • Larry has always been writing on food and travel topics 
  • Everyone eats whenever they travel, so Larry likes to focus on food
  • He tried to eat locally and regionally when traveling, and in doing that he started finding that all of what he made here that he originally ate overseas was bad quality and could not be recreated
    • This is because here in America, lots of what we consume and are sold is fake
  • We are being misled
  • How is it legal to label incorrectly?
    • People have been doing it for 20+ years
    • The government allows for a large margin of error
      • The big food companies take full advantage of margin of error and even go overboard
  • Different categories in the book
    • Legal, illegal, gray area, immoral but legal
    • Illegal = substituting one seafood for another
      • Nobody is policing
    • In lots of cases there are no rules from FDA 
  • Defining 'organic' is the biggest step we've made in the modern area for labeling
  • The FDA has intentionally chosen not to define 'natural'
    • 'Natural' means nothing
      • Uranium is natural, too
  • FDA ignores a lot of their own policies and they ignore, when it comes to seafood, congressional mandate
    • The Obama administration has made it so seafood fraud is finally getting checked up on, and looks like the fraud will lessen

YORK

  • York is his middle name
  • His first name is Lawrence and his dad is Larry, so he has always been referred to by his middle name
  • He is more a reader and a tweeter
  • Looking for a lifestyle that didn't have to do with looking ingredients up in a book or calorie counting
    • He liked the simplicity of NSNG
  • He is 11 days in and his energy and sleep has improved greatly
    • He noticed a huge change in his palette too, and has stopped smoking
      • Fortunately, smoking culture has changed and people smoke significantly less or less in public now
  • From the South

LAP-BAND FAILURE

  • York's heaviest weight was 345
    • Right now he is 315
  • This is the first time in his life that he has not calorie counted or drank shakes, etc.
  • Many of Vinnie's callers have had this surgery
  • Sure, you can't eat because your stomach is significantly smaller, but then you aren't getting nutrients
    • Other problems include reflux issues and much more
  • York had his filled up with so much fluid that he woke up in the middle of the night gasping for air
    • Now he doesn't have fluid, but it's still hard sometimes to digest things and get them through
  • It also restricts what type of food you can eat and when you can eat, which if you decide to eat like NSNG, can be very difficult 
  • He feels very liberated doing NSNG now
    • He is going to try to get on a food preparation schedule because when one goes to restaurants there are always hidden and naughty ingredients
      • That being said, NSNG is SO worth it and York loves it

  • This podcast was recorded on the second day of the Olympic Games
  • Virginia Thrasher won the first gold for the US in the 10m Air Rifle competition at 19 years old
    • Very exacting sport
    • A prodigy -- shot a gun for the first time 5 years ago while hunting
  • They are showing the entire Road Cycling event
    • We just got through the Tour de France, and that's REAL cycling
    • This isn't very exciting compared to that, weird that they are televising all of it
    • Vinnie loves watching cycling, but he thinks this is ridiculous 
    • They played all of this instead of the Cinderella Story that was Virginia Thrasher's win
  • Yet, they'll show swimming heats 
  • Kim Rhode -- one of the most winningest Olympians of all time (5 medals)
    • Skeet Shooting and Trap
    • She is a great all around person and amazing competitor
    • Again, they won't even show her events 
    • Michael Phelps, however, has gotten into all types of trouble yet they still show even his preliminary heats
      • He is our flag carrier and thus our main representative 
  • Qatar essentially buys athletes from the desperately impoverished who live in surrounding countries
    • Only wealthy because of oil and take advantage of those around them

NSNG DOCTORS

  • Most doctors will not be supportive of NSNG because many are old school, low fat, "cholesterol is bad" type of people
  • No such thing as an NSNG doctor, technically, because Vinnie made the phrase up
    • NSNG is just telling people to eat GOOD, REAL food so a doctor isn't really necessary to eat this way
  • It can be hard if your doctor dislikes NSNG, but if they do, they likely do not know what they are talking about because if you eat NSNG your health will exemplify that you are eating right
    • If so, you can find doctors that at least are accepting and understanding of the diet 
  • Many who eat NSNG get off of a bunch of the meds they are prescribed by doctors 
  • Nicole is with doctors every day, and doctors don't REALLY know and just refer to government guidlines which we know is all wrong

  • Often, these multi-millionaire televangelists are very corrupt and don't live the way they preach 
  • Ex: Jim Bakker
    • Dated Jessica Hahn and a scandal ensued

TRAP SHOOTING

  • Now that Vinnie has his good shoulder back, he's been getting back into shotguns
  • Shooting consistently 80+%, some days 90%+
  • Hopefully will start competing soon
  • Went shooting while the 'Sand Fire' was going on, and he nearly didn't have to wear sunglasses because the ash covered up the sun so efficiently 
    • Apocalyptic hue

FAT SHAKE

  • Vinnie's fat shake is in the Eat Happy Cookbook
  • It gives you energy, is an 'energy shake', but fat is GOOD so we will call it the fat shake 
  • Vinnie will have a fat shake and it will be enough to constitute a meal 
    • 14-16 oz
  • Coffee, 2/3rds of the way up (the good stuff)
  • In the blender on top of the coffee he put:
    • Kerrygold butter (around a tablespoon)
    • A handful of walnuts (7-9)
    • 1 egg (raw, without shell)
    • Gelatin -- he adds this because it is good for bones, ligaments, soft tissue, especially while rehabbing his shoulder
      • Uses Knox Gelatin, works just as well as Bovine Collagen and is cheaper and more accessible
  • Whizzes all of this up in his Vitamix
  • When you are fat-adapted, this tastes like it's sugary!
  • If you don't do dairy, substitute coconut oil for butter
  • Vinnie will always use fresh food as opposed to protein powder
    • REAL, FRESH food is better than anything processed

DAVID'S STORY

  • It all started when David got his first part time job at Burger King
    • He would binge-eat at night, almost every day
    • Went from Large --> X-Large 
  • Didn't focus enough on his studies and ended up attending community college
    • Stopped showing up to class because he was so depressed with a negative body image and no motivation
  • Looked through health books in the bookstore
    • They all contradicted one another and he didn't know which to follow

MCT OIL

  • Andy was used to cooking with only butter and olive oil
    • Vinnie, however, often uses coconut oil from Trader Joes
    • Coconut Oil = MCT Oil
  • Vinnie cooks with this 70% of the time
    • Medium chain triglycerides
      • It is energy currency more than just another sat fat (although MCT is a sat fat but has those medium chain triglycerides)
      • Great for fat-adapted folks 
  • Butter is also good and will give you energy if you're fat-adapted
    • But, butter hardly has any Medium chain triglycerides in it
      • More long chain in general
  • Your body would prefer to use MCT oil as energy as opposed to longer chain triglycerides
  • MCT is essentially a "cleaner burning fuel" than butter
