    • Ru El has learned to let more things fly in the FB group, until someone needs to step in (doesn't happen too often)
    • The Beauchamps are the other two who run the facebook page
  • Vinnie Tortorich's No Sugar No Grains FB page has near 9,000 members -- click here to check it out!

: Episode 640 - Microbiologist Kiran Krishnan joins Vinnie for a fascinating discussion of gut health and the human microbiome.

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS

KIRAN KRISHNAN

  • Was just on the Monday show with Vinnie and Anna discussing leaky gut
  • Esteemed microbiologist
  • Check out his website at peakbiotics.com
  • Great success in dietary supplement and nutrition markets
  • Went to school at U of Iowa where he studied microbiology and biochemistry
    • Did Post-Grad in Iowa as well studying microbiology with focus on clinical microbio
      • Focuses on human diseases caused by viruses, bacteria, parasites, etc.
      • Pathogenesis of disease
      • Probiotics
  • After university he started his own research organization
    • Wanted to offer companies an affordable way of doing high-clinical trial
    • Did that for a decade, still does that as well as other work
  • He is Indian, moved to America right before highschool; his name is pronounced KEER-in

ADDICTION

  • Addiction works like everything else
  • Vinnie found he even got addicted to face cream
    • After a while, his face stopped producing oil because it relied on the cream so much
  • He stopped the face cream and his skin started oiling itself and his lips were more supple without the lip goop
  • Our habits and addictions are recent
    • We have been evolving for millions of years
    • The addictions and weird habits we have have developed over the past 100 years
  • Our bodies still exist how they did forever ago, but by doing modern day habitual things that we do, we are putting stress on our bodies
    • Ex: bathing!

DEODORANT

  • Deodorant is a new thing
  • You are putting aluminum under your arms -- found to be harmful to the human body
  • Regardless of how much deodorant you use, if you sweat you will still probably smell at the end of the day
  • Crystal is definitely better than standard aluminum-based deodorant
  • The type of aluminum used in crystals is not as harmful to your circulatory and lymphatic systems
  • Dr. Krishnan uses Schmidt's
    • It is essential oils and sage and such
    • He has some in a pot and only has to apply every few days because it works so well
    • Anti-oxidative properties in this are good
    • Essential oils keep bacterial load down without killing off the bacteria

SWEATING

  • Sweating is great for your body
  • Sitting in an infrared sauna is good to dilate vessels, drain out toxins, get the liquids in your body moving
    • It is a type of cleanse!
  • Sweating is good to control good bacteria!

GUT HEALTH

  • Over half of antibiotics prescribed are unnecessary
    • They are either not needed or won't work on that type of bacteria
  • One cycle of certain antibiotics can cause your gut to be harmed for a year
  • One dose of augmentin wipes down your gut bacteria levels by almost 90%
    • Takes a week and a half or two to get back just from that one dose
      • However, the portions of bacteria that comes back are different
        • More robust species that are anti-biotic resistant have an easier time coming back when this happens
  • Use of antibiotics when young also contributes to asthma and allergies
  • The use of antibiotics under 4 has a profound effect in creating auto immune disorders

  • Your brain is trying to cross over to ketone bodies and isn't used to the lack of sugar
    • This doesn't mean you need to be in ketosis!!!
  • Keep eating NSNG and it should pass and you will feel better!
    • If it doesn't, reach out to Vinnie or the FB group, see what might be wrong
  • Sugar is an addiction, can be just as bad as heroine for some
    • Ultimately, though, it is healthier and you will end up being healthier, feeling more energetic, and more!

  • Look for Vinnie speaking in other places in the next year!
Jul 20, 2016

Episode 639 - Vinnie and Andy Schreiber clear up the very prevalent confusion, as seen on Twitter, around pre & post-workout nutrition.

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSOR

VINNIE'S SHOULDER

  • Vinnie had his Ream and Run surgery by Dr. Matsen just about a year ago
    • He was on a Friday show
  • Literally changed Vinnie's life
  • He had prior been walking around like a cripple and now has near full range of motion!
  • Wasn't able to ride his bike for the last couple of years before his surgery
    • Now, he can ride again, slow and steady
      • At the moment, he can ride like 2 hours without pain instead of 30 minutes

PRE-WORKOUT NUTRITION

  • You don't need a powder or potion
    • That is ALL Bro Science
  • If you are NSNG and your body knows how to use ketones and fat, you may not need to eat before!
  • For example, this morning Vinnie had 2 eggs with 3 yolks with some MCT oil, full fat cream in his espresso, then rode 4 hours later without re-fueling
    • Vinnie grabbed one tiny piece of beef jerky (NSNG jerky) as he walked out the door

POST-WORKOUT NUTRITION

  • When Vinnie got off his bike, he had some salami and some hard cheese (Romano) and water
  • Then he went to the shooting range
  • You don't need glutamine or anything like that
  • "Recovery Drinks" are BS
    • Might as well not have worked out and had a candy bar instead
Jul 18, 2016

: Episode 638 - Anna and Vinnie take time debunking Sanjay Gupta, CNN's medical experts. They go through one of his 2 minute health videos in detail and show how it is full of contradictions, misleading imagery, and confusing statements. It's no wonder that Americans are so confused about what is healthy and what is not. #circle #zero

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS

WHO IS SANJAY GUPTA?

  • Neurosurgeon and reporter
    • Wanted to be Surgeon General (could be, one day [hopefully not])
  • Often on CNN for health related stuff
  • Constantly contradicts himself
  • Reads off of teleprompter
  • People who write for him have no idea what they're talking about
  • Try to sell "Standard American Diet" = SAD
  • His videos lend themselves to allow Vinnie to begin debunking Sanjay Gupta

DEBUNKING SANJAY GUPTA

  • He is saying that some carbs are healthy and some are unhealthy BUT then he says they ALL DO THE SAME THING
    • So how are some healthy and some unhealthy if they turn out the same in your body?
    • This is why the American people are so confused
    • In 42 seconds, he has talked in a complete circle
  • He says fruits, vegetables, candy, honey (simple carbs) are processed quickly which is bad because it turns into sugar quickly
    • He just called fruit good now he's saying it is bad?
    • How can vegetables be grouped with candy?
    • :52 seconds
  • He says other carbs give you longer sustained energy from complex carbs -- potatoes, beans, BREAD
    • Potatoes in REALITY are very sugary and cause glycogen load / glucose spike
      • He is claiming they are really good
    • He says whole grains are good
    • Wait, but popcorn is a grain and he just said it was bad?
    • #CIRCLE
  • He links Watermelon and Popcorn in the video
    • In reality, Watermelon has a VERY LOW glycemic index because of water content, and now he has said popcorn is BAD but grains (which popcorn is) are good?
    • These two things are incomparable
  • Only thing Vinnie and Sanjay agree upon is that sugar not used for energy (for most people, most of it) turns into fat!
    • 1:52 of a 2:09 minute video is the first time Sanjay speaks the truth after he has confused and misguided everyone
    • First time we hear fat in the video
  • He says a double cheeseburger is bad although he just said grains are good
    • The general public thinks the meat and cheese is bad, so is Sanjay implying that the meat and cheese is bad or the grain (which he previously said was good) is bad
    • In reality, the only healthy part is the meet and cheese and lettuce and tomato!
  • He links fat to a chicken wing as if no good fats exist
    • SO confusing and deliberately misleading

Jul 16, 2016

: Episode 637 - Listener Jim ask Vinnie for advice on overcoming the temptations that derail his NSNG journey. Jim is a very large man and Vinnie recommends that he seek professional help.

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSOR

JIM WRIGHT

  • Works a job at a software company in Culver City
  • Found Vinnie from Abel James
  • Is around 500lbs and has been for a good while

  • Is 52 years old and 5'7"
  • Has only been able to do NSNG for 8 days without eating sugar or grains
    • Getting the momentum is the hardest part!
    • It really is hard to not fall off the wagon

PROFESSIONAL HELP

  • Vinnie thinks he needs to find a way to get to 30 days of NSNG
    • Get your body moving in the right direction
  • Obesity Code by Jason Fung is a great read
  • There is no shame in seeking professional help for sugar and grain addiction
  • Seek professionals like Fung or Rosedale who can help your body settle down from what has been going on
  • Jim isn't weak -- it is an addiction and one can be strong and still feel the need to give in
    • Food is one of the hardest addictions to break
  • Vinnie believes he needs to find this help now
  • A doctor can help him monitor what he is doing
Jul 15, 2016

: Episode 636 - Vinnie interviews Astrophysicist Rainer Klement, Ph.D, co-founder of German Society for Paleo Nutrition, about his research on ketogenic cancer treatment (using ketogenic diet to treat cancer)...

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS

RAINER KLEMENT

  • A physicist, concentrated in Astronomy
  • Went to a lot of school in Germany
  • Triathlon lover, and thus gained a love for health and fitness research
  • Worked in oncology department and studying Ketogenic Diet

KETOGENIC CANCER TREATMENT

  • Ketogenic diet: High fat, moderate protein, low carb
  • Low insulin levels lead to more ketone bodies from fatty acids
    • Your metabolism works as though you've been fasting, and you still get all the nutrients you need
  • Malignant cells cannot metabolize these ketone bodies
    • Therefore, ketogenic diet suppress tumor growth
  • Ketones actually mess with the expression of genes in tumors
  • Link between sugar and cancer
    • Sugar actually feeds tumors well, helping them grow and spread
      • Cancer as a metabolic disease

DRINKS

  • 5pm when this show was recorded
  • Vinnie is drinking espresso
    • Keeps Vinnie 'in line'

  • Andy is drinking some Glenfiddich on the rocks

PHONE CALLS

  • Sign up for a phone call with Vinnie
    • 30 mins or an hour

EATING SCHEDULES

  • People have been asking recently about 6 meals a day
    • 1983 called and wants their diet plan back
    • This is silly
    • Eat when you are hungry, eat until you are full.
  • A few minutes after you eat sugar and grains, you want to eat again
    • Ex: after Chinese food, you're ready to eat again in 20 minutes
  • It takes 3 hours for the content of your stomach to empty
    • But when you eat carbs you're hungry within an hour
    • This is because of your hormones kicking in
      • Grelin, and leptin
    • Listen to Jason Fung or Rosedale podcasts to hear more about this
  • If you are eating sugar and grains, your switches will become dull, and you will feel the need to constantly graze
  • Instead of having 3 meals a day you're supposed to have, you're having 6 meals a day
    • Not sensible and does NOT work for weight loss because your body is never burning fat -- doesn't use stored fat, actually will just store that extra sugar/insulin as a long chain triglyceride/fat
    • Tina_Louise_1964

    • If you have a liter of coke that morning, though, it is awful
  • To get better, it is important to stay honest with yourself

  • It is not most peoples' fault, their good intentions have been stolen

: Episode 632 - Author and expert Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum discusses fibromyalgia and pain management...

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS

DR. JACOB TEITELBAUM

PAIN MANAGEMENT

  • 1/4 people struggle with Chronic Pain
  • It is okay to use things like physical therapy although most physical therapists know very little about pain relief
  • Use the whole tool kit — therapy, medications if used wisely, surgery if necessary, herbals (curamin — has been better than morphine for some — can be taken along with any pain medication)
    • Europharma makes this, and they also have a similar topical cream
      • Pain relief miracle
  • You truly need all the vitamins and minerals
  • Nutritional support
    • Many people find eating sugar and grain decreases stiffness and pain
  • Herbals can decrease Alzheimer's/dementia likelihood, cancer likelihood, etc.
  • Pain is not like an infection — it is not an outside enemy
    • It is internal, tells your body it needs something else
  • Before Vinnie’s ream and run surgery, he had to deal with awful chronic pain which he controlled through physical therapy, nutrients, and eating right
    • He was told after the surgery he would be on painkillers for 6 months — he was only on them for 9 days
  • Muscle pain comes from lack of energy
    • They get locked in the shortened position
    • 50-70% of pain is muscle pain
  • Nothing quite like a massage therapists
    • All have different trainings and techniques

: Episode 631 - Vinnie tackles Andy's question about intermittent fasting and Vinnie responds in more than 140 characters...

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSOR

INTERMITTENT FASTING

  • Vinnie isn't a fan of it for a long period of time, but he does know its place
  • IF becomes a phrase thrown around -- nearly becomes bro science
  • Hard to give a complete answer in 140 characters (Twitter)
  • Good for someone who is metabolically stuck and still has a lot to lose
    • Read Obesity Code by Jason Fung
  • IF is not for everyone
  • Even if you don't eat a few hours before you sleep and wait a couple hours before you eat breakfast, you are still Intermittent Fasting for about half a day
  • For some people in dietary ketosis (which Vinnie also thinks is not for everyone) might skip a meal by accident because they are so fat adapted
Jul 4, 2016

: Episode 630 - Vinnie and Anna talk about grass-fed beef, food in France, f***ed-up chocolate, and NSNG Philly cheesesteaks!

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS

GRASS-FED BEEF

  • Is conventional beef better than grass-fed because it is fatter?
    • Grass-fed still has plenty of fat as long as you are eating the fatty parts
  • Taste & quality is what really matters
  • Grass-fed beef isn't given corn or grains so that is good if you can afford it but if not, no big deal!
    • As long as you avoid fast-food meat as much as possible, you're good
  • Vinnie eats a lot of grass-fed but mostly just eats whatever he can
  • Prices of grass-fed depends on availability

EUROPEAN EATING

  • Lots of dairy
  • Different stores for every type of food
  • They don't full their food full of hormones and chemicals
  •
    • No GMOs
  • When Anna was in Italy, she did notice the kids were getting a bit chunkier

CHOCOLATE

NSNG PHILLY CHEESESTEAK

NSNG MIND GAME

  • Easy to get down on yourself
  • Can be hard to stay strong
  • It DOES get easier with time
  • Its about feeling good as well as losing weight
  • The scale is dangerous because it doesn't show the real results for a lot of people
  • How Courtney sees herself is different than from how other people see her
    • She wants to be extra lean but she is healthy and a thin as is!
    • Just because she was lighter doesn't mean she should be
Jul 1, 2016

    • Her favorite?
      • NSNG! Works the best and is a lifestyle rather than a diet

NSNG PLATEAU

  • Always quite a bit harder for women
    • Often women have hormonal problems as well, as do men but more common in women
  • Most people do plateau and then give up because they lose faith -- one must keep on keeping on
  • Test to see what works for you
    • take out dairy one week, fruits another, etc., to see how your body reacts to different foods
