Vinnie Tortorich answers questions from Katie Miskel regarding lifting for beginners on today's episode of the Angriest Trainer podcast.

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSOR

ADVICE FOR BEGINNING TO LIFT

  • Katie has just started to lift; what is a good way to start out?
  • The intimidation factor is real
  • Depends on what you want to achieve
  • For Katie it is being toned and fit
  • Leg extensions, etc
  • Heel raises
  • Bench press or pushups for secondary chest exercise as well as triceps
  • Don't be intimidated! Especially women! Men are just surprised

WHAT IS GOOD SUPPLEMENTATION?

  • Don't take "get bigger muscle" products
    • No real science behind it
    • Some of it is harmful
  • Whey protein is good
  • Eggs are also really good after a workout!
    • Lots of amino acids
  • Branch chain amino acids

Vinnie Tortorich and Andy Schreiber discuss Zone 2 simply on today's Wednesday edition of the Angriest Trainer podcast.

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSOR

VINNIE'S WEEK

  • Just came back from a week of crewing in the desert
  • Vinnie records at least 4 shows a week -- that's quite a lot!
  • Over 450 or some odd episodes up

WHAT IS ZONE 2... REALLY?

  • There are 5 zones, although most people only need to think of zones 1-4
  • Everyone has an anaerobic threshold
    • Zone 5: where your body goes when lactic acid production > lactic acid clearing
      • This is for intense athletes
  • Zone 1: basically walking, maybe a fast walk
  • Zone 2: When you're breathing hard, but can still have a conversation
  • You can get a test in a lab to tell you what your threshold for zone 2 is
  • Poor man's way: take 180, subtract by age, add a few points if you are very active and anywhere in there you are hitting zone 2 (heart rate)
    • Slow up a bit if you are in zone 3, because then you are burning more glycogen than fat
  • If you are looking to PR a marathon, look into some zone 3 and 4
  • Best way to stay in shape AND burn fat!
  • Little sprint spurts (only if you have a good base) are fine
  • Do this for minimum of 8 wks (Vinnie recommends 12 wks)
Aug 24, 2015

Vinnie Tortorich and co-host Anna Vocino talk a little bit of everything on this week's random Monday edition of the Angriest Trainer podcast.

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS

ADVERTISEMENTS

  • Vinnie will not sell out
  • Everything Vinnie advertises for he believes in
  • People who will give big cuts for products Anna and Vinnie don't support make offers -- Anna and Vinnie will never accept
  • For example, Vinnie & Anna (unlike Dr. Oz) would never advertise "Heart Healthy Grains"

POOPING

  • We will have a show on pooping soon with Dr. X
  • Some people with bad constipation go once or twice every couple weeks
  • This can be bad for one's health
    • Diverticulitis -- inflammation of diverticulosis
  • Dr. X knew a patient who's poop was so backed up it was coming out of the other end

SUBARUS

  • Subaru is a "lesbian car"
  • Serena has one and Dr. X just got one
  • So much cheaper, more comfortable, more efficient
  • Luxury cars are ripoffs, even if they look sleek

KARI GORMLEY

  • Check out her website!
  • Very enthusiastic and very happy
  • Vinnie thinks those tech tees and tights smell really bad
  • Microfibers
  • Vinnie suggests using animal product pee stain remover (Nature's Miracle) to neutralize odors
  • She is part of the "The Order of the Vinnie"
    • each's audience respects the other

On today's Saturday edition of the Angriest Trainer podcast, Vinnie Tortorich answers questions from the newly NSNG Alyssa Klarman of Florida.

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSOR

ALYSSA KLARMAN

  • Heard Vinnie's podcast on Resume with Chris Laxamana
    • Tallulah (hey!) got Vinnie on the show
      • Vinnie couldn't get on the show himself
      • Vinnie taught Tallulah the power of her
  • Alyssa started NSNG a few weeks ago from a strict 1280 calorie/day diet
  • She feels so much better now that she is no longer calorie in/calorie out
    • This is better at 125lbs than starving to get to 119lbs

IS RED WINE OR BEER WORSE?

  • Alyssa and her husband go out drinking with friends a few times a week
    • She has cut diet soda out of her diet!
  • She wants to know if the sugar of red wine, or the sugar/grains of beer is less "Life into Living"
    • Both are bad, but if it is truly occasional, it is okay
  • Best way to go is drinking distilled liquors

BEST ADVICE FOR WOMEN COMING OFF OF CALORIE IN/CALORIE OUT AND GAINING WEIGHT AS THEY START NSNG?

  • Women coming off of calorie in/calorie out will start eating lots of fat, and in turn, gain weight
    • It is hard not to freak out but gaining weight is normal after starving oneself
      • You must stay the course!
  • NSNG is not a quick fix, it is a paradigm shift
  • After the first couple of weeks, it starts getting better (getting past carbflu or ketoflu)
  • Some people need to snack more than others -- if you need to, make sure it is in moderation and NSNG

WHEN ADJUSTING, SHOULD YOU AVOID SNACKING?

  • Coming off of eating unhealthy snacks, eat as much NSNG as you need
  • Because the carbs are generally not as filling, you may have to eat more at the beginning, and that is okay
  • It should start to self regulate after a few weeks

IS JICAMA OKAY?

  • Alyssa traded apples and strawberries for jicama
  • Jicama is good! Nothing but fiber :)
  • Vinnie is starting to take a harder line approach to fruit
    • Vinnie thinks that fruit is okay, but shouldn't be a staple
      • Berries are the best!

  • Been on the podcast a few times
  • What starts in the ultra world, trickles down into your work out, you being healthier
  • Holds the 100 mile American record which he bested by 12 minutes
  • Holds the 200k record by about 30 minutes
  • Holds 12 hour run world record from event called Desert Solstice
    • pick a distance under 24 hours and chase the record

HISTORY

  • Zach in the past few years was coaching, training, and was a full time teacher
  • Last school year, he stepped away from teaching to focus on coaching, training, and racing
    • Moved to west coast (Davis) to do this
  • In NorCal he has an easier time training for hilly things and more things overall

ZERO DROP FOOTWEAR APPROACH

  • Zach found that this was the best when doing biomechanics research
  • Bouncing on his toes would be better for his feet
  • He went with Ultra Footwear because they give a holistic approach
    • Toes are more spread out in the foot
  • Better for trail running due to toe splay

PHYSIOLOGY

  • Zach started looking at people who couldn't take the hard load of training
  • He averages 5000 miles of training for the past 3 years
  • He doesn't want to burn out -- doesn't think he will
  • Runner, Frank, 70 and hasn't burnt out
  • Burning out has to do with stress (every day stress) and nutrition

VINNIE'S TRAINING

  • Takes 30 mins to get to Zone 1 / Zone 2
    • 135 bpm
  • Spins each day which makes him dream
    • New shoulder is making this possible
  • He thinks about getting into ultra cycling again
    • Not necessarily competing, just training

DIET

  • A listener who is in ketosis climbed Whitney with her daughter
    • Had coffee and some food at the top
  • When Vinnie climbed Whitney, he had some bacon and eggs, then barely any protein powder -- all in dietary ketosis
  • Zach does not measure his ketosis but stays in a state where he can utilize carbs the best without eating too many
    • Low amount of sugar !
  • Purifies macronutrient ratios
    • Won't eat carbs after a hard work out
  • Carbs hurt your body and cause oxidative stress
  • Vinnie found that lifesavers are the perfect carb for sugar trickle while cycling
  • Ketosis isn't necesarry as long as you are monitoring carbs properly
  • Check out Zach and his website here!

Andy Schreiber and Vinnie Tortorich discuss a new product on today's Wednesday edition of the Angriest Trainer podcast.

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS

NEW PRODUCT

  • People have been requesting new products from PVC
  • Top request is children's vitamin, but 8+ kids can take PVC
  • 2nd most requested is calcium and magnesium
  • The new product is a magnesium mineral!
  • We used neither magnesium citrate or carbonate
  • Should be on the market mid-late Sept. 2015

IMPORTANCE OF MAGNESIUM

  • Mineral that people are most likely to be deficient in
    • Pesticides in food production, soil erosion, etc, deplete magnesium in food sources
  • Joints, heart function, muscles, etc, all depend on magnesium
  • It is an important component in insulin regulation
    • Therefore, this mineral can help Type 2 diabetes
      • Consult your physician if this affects you!
  • Magnesium can help lessen constipation

WHY PVC MAGNESIUM IS BETTER

  • Comes in a ton of forms, and our form is the healthiest and best
    • Other magnesium capsules are either magnesium citrate, magnesium carbonate, both of which have negative components
      • Citrate and carbonate can give you the runs among other harmful effects
  • Ours is magnesium oxide which is absorbed just as well, and is overall better for you

On today's Monday edition of the Angriest Trainer podcast, Vinnie and Anna discuss Vinnie's recent trip, NSNG Recipes, and the best way to burn fat.

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS

BADWATER 135

  • Run by Chris Kostman
  • This is an ultra marathon that starts in the Badwater Basin
  • Vinnie and Serena crewed for a friend and fan of the show (Tony who is a lawyer)
    • Tony is ripped and NSNG
  • Vinnie took the first pace (17 miles uphill from below sea level to above 5,000ft)
    • Had to do his arm exercises right before
  • Tony was the only one without inflammation on day 2 (no sugar!!!)

NSNG RECIPES

AMAZON WINNER

  • Bill Rodway won a t-shirt
    • He bought probiotics by Mercola
  • Go buy something through Vinnie's Amazon link and send in what you bought!

LONG SUSTAINED CARDIO VS HIGH INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING (HIIT)

  • Zone 2 is the best way to burn fat
    • Zones go between 1 and 5
  • Zone 2 is a zone in which you can hold a conversation while exercising
  • A test can tell you what you need to do to stay in zone 2
  • Simpler way: take 180 - *your age* = your zone 2
    • Take into account how active you are, add or subtract a few points respectively
  • HIIT burns glucose (sugar) but not fat
  • Good for those with epilepsy and diabetes
  • Ketosis = low carb, fat adapted = high fat

On today's episode of the Angriest Trainer podcast, Vinnie Tortorich answers listener questions from Megan Meek (20) concerning consumption of dairy and eating raw and still nutritiously.

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS

MEGAN'S JOB

  • Megan works in a piercing salon
  • She does not recommend gauges
  • Vinnie thinks that someone without gauges would get easily hired over someone with gauges (who makes bad decision)
    • Vinnie will discriminate
  • The nonconformist would be the one without piercings and tattoos

WHICH FOODS SHOULD BE EATEN RAW (vegan) FOR THE BEST NUTRITIONAL VALUE?

  • Vinnie thinks raw food diet is fine however it can be dangerous (low blood sugar)
  • Definitely a correct way to do it -- must be constantly eating to get enough
  • Light steam on veggies is not a bad idea for nutrition & consumption
  • Meat should be cooked for best nutritional value

WHAT ABOUT DAIRY?

  • Megan is a sugar addict -- when she adds generous amounts (1/4 cup) of heavy cream to coffee (1 or 2 cups), she doesn't crave sugar or get that hungry
    • How much cream is too much cream?
  • Vinnie doesn't see an issue with this
    • If this is keeping Megan away from sugar and other issues, it's ok
    • Try lessening amount slightly, but if not it isn't the end of the world

Gary Taubes makes a second appearance on the Friday edition of the Angriest Trainer podcast with Vinnie Tortorich.

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS

GARY TAUBES & HIS MUST-READS

VINNIE'S READING

  • Reads incredibly slowly but comprehends way more than the average person
  • Scientific brain -- he doesn't assume, he knows
  • Ended up allowing him to not pay attention in class, just read the books

NUTRITION WRITING

  • He was doing nutritional pieces for science sections
  • He looked at evidence and saw whether or not it really was supported
  • Gary wrote a controversial article calling out the nutrition world for saying low fat was bad
  • Initially was researching what caused the obesity epidemic?
    • Two hypotheses: high fructose corn syrup, shift to low fat diets
      • LOW FAT DIETS ended up being the issue, clear in his research
  • Even in the 60's, people weren't fat
  • In the early 1900s, only ~1/20 people were obese
  • Only 2 Obese kids in Gary's middle school
  • 60's : baked potato was fattening ; 80's: baked potato was a heart healthy food
  • At first, people didn't realize that high fructose corn syrup was sugar
  • When heart health came into question, fat became (incorrectly) bad, and carbs/sugar became (incorrectly) passable

WHY WE GET FAT

  • The general idea is calorie in / calorie out and thermodynamics
  • Just like you can't think of wealth/poverty in terms of money intake vs money spent, you can't think of calories that way either
  • We secrete insulin in response to our carbohydrate intake

Welcome to the Wednesday edition of the Angriest Trainer podcast, where Vinnie Tortorich and cohost Andy Schreiber discuss Vinnie's Saturday and how Vinnie and Andy sell their vitamins through Amazon.

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSOR

VINNIE'S SATURDAY

  • 5:15am -- physical therapy
  • Got ready for his day
  • Spoke on the phone with a woman from England (Janie)
    • Discussed her relationship with food
  • Talked to a guy named Henry who quoted old podcasts
  • Packed about 1000 bottles of vitamins with Andy today
  • Vinnie enjoys talking to more people at a lower price so he can help

WHY AMAZON?

  • Had to charge ~10$ more to make a profit through Amazon
  • Shipping company usually sends them out
  • Originally sent 200 bottles to Amazon, but quickly realized they needed many more
  • Sold a bottle every three or four days or so
  • The more people buy, the lower (better) the ranking of the product gets
  • Selling way more on Amazon than expected to the point where they have to ship their own bottles
  • Top quality at the price that every man can afford
    • Rolls Royce priced as a Toyota
  • No advertising dollars behind the vitamins which is why the rise in numbers selling is so shocking

HEIDI AND FRANK

  • Vinnie was on this LA morning show recently
  • Originally he did a phone interview, and they liked him enough to bring him on the show again

STARBUCKS

  • Vinnie couldn't find Starbucks in a 5 mile radius in a poorer neighborhood
  • In barrios and such you can't find a Starbucks or even a bank for that matter
  • Magic Johnson has helped this
  • Watch Vinnie's Starbucks Video Here
  • Coffee shops in poor neighborhoods have things like donuts instead of bagels

HORMONES

  • Spit tests, blood tests, freeze tests to look at hormones
  • Doctors can figure out what you need to be tested for based off of hormones

INTERMITTENT FASTING

  • Vinnie is not a fan of IF
    • When he misses lunch, it isn't intentional
  • IF can lead to eating disorders
  • If you plateau, you may have hormone issues so don't just skip to IF and restriction

WALKING WITH BROKEN BONES

  • Can walking alone keep one in shape and lose fat?
    • It will keep you in shape & healthy, but likely not make you lose (lots of) fat
  • How can one help broken bone recover?
    • Take magnesium!
    • Knox gelatin

FITBIT

  • Fitbits are really expensive
  • You can buy cheaper heart rate monitors
  • "You don't need a fitbit to tell you you're sleeping"Vinnie Tortorich and co-host Anna Vocino discuss intermittent fasting, Heidi and Frank, is walking enough to lose weight, a 6 day weight training plan for 30 mins a day, and how effective is the Fitbit? on today's episode of the Angriest Trainer podcast!

Vinnie Tortorich chats with Tarun Bajaj from India, residing in Australia, who talks about how NSNG changed his life on this episode of the Angriest Trainer podcast.

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSOR

TERUN'S STORY

  • He is from a similar place that many shirpas come from
  • He comes from one of the wettest places in the world -- it rains nearly every day
  • The chaos from the earthquake did spread throughout India due to aftershocks and such
  • Terun is in really good shape!

HOW VINNIE CHANGED TERUN'S LIFE

  • His (ex)girlfriend told him he was becoming too fat
  • He was chubby in the athlete-context and he really wanted to change this
  • Everything mentioned on the Facebook group appeared foreign, especially given Terun's ethnic background
  • He lost tons of weight and gained tons of muscle and confidence
  • He became "India's Angriest NSNGer"
  • He believes that NSNG is an awesome lifestyle with lots of flavor(s)

INDIA

  • Cows are sacred, there are many Yaks
  • India is so diverse, and according to Tarun, it is "full of hypocrites"
  • Chicken is often eaten, but most people live on grains

DOCUMENTARY

  • Tarun will be in an ABC-like documentary about Indians living in Australia
  • He is in an arranged marriage section
  • He told an Indian girl that he ate red meat and she rejected him for it
  • The filmmaker has even seen the transition within Tarun's life

Steve Park, an English body builder and Vinnie Tortorich go one-on-one on today's Friday edition of the Angriest Trainer podcast.

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS

SPINAL TAP

  • American movie with Stonehenge in it
  • Bad British accents, but great entertainment value

STEVE AS A BODYBUILDER

  • Steve is more than just a fan
  • He has been a bodybuilder since he was 17 years old
    • He was quite built for his age, too big for English sports
  • Steve had a coach who provided him with a gym and the means to get bigger and better to play rugby and football and short distance sprinting
  • 13.5 for a 100m sprint and improved
  • Eventually got into body building and went for that

VINNIE'S BOOK

  • Steve related to Vinnie in his book, working hard in the gym in the bayou
  • Listened to it on audio and it inspired him to write to Vinnie
  • Steve feels for Vinnie who got bullied as a young athlete
  • Both had disproportionate leg strength

LOMBARDIAN COACHING

  • Coach for the Green Bay Packers
  • "practice doesn't make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect"
  • "winning is not everything, it's the only thing"
  • Vinnie grew up with this style of coaching
  • Not everyone is a winner-- Vinnie personally thinks this is the way to think
  • Work on your weakest parts the most

BODY & ENGINES

  • Bodies and engines of cars are kind of similar
  • There's a big lump of metal, but something different going on different inside each one
  • Steve wanted to know how things worked on the inside -- both cars, and the bodies of humans
  • Vinnie both built cars and got to dissect cadavers

PERSONAL TRAINING

  • Steve and his wife both personal train
  • This is a side job -- started with people in the gym always asking advice
  • His business built from word of mouth
  • Steve only works with a handful of clients, but tailors his service to whomever needs it
  • Each penny that his clients spend counts, so Steve makes sure to give people real service
  • Vinnie is still surprised by how many people call often for training and life advice

Vinnie Tortorich and co host Andy Schreiber talk strengthening one's lower body, and riding bicycles through sand on today's Wednesday edition of the Angriest Trainer podcast.

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS

ANDY'S WORKOUT

  • Andy is trying to get abs so Vinnie went with Andy to help guide him on the best work outs to get abs
  • Andy wasn't doing any lower body (Vinnie thinks lower body is more important)
  • Working on lower body improves circulation
  • Leg presses, Lunges, Leg curls all good to help one's lower body
  • Use the smith machine -- Andy doesn't need to do free weight squats
  • For lunges, one can use the wall to balance
  • Look down in front of you in the mirror to help your balance
  • Leg presses (12-15 reps)
  • Leg curls and leg extensions aren't important unless you are trying to get "bulgy"

ANDY'S FALL

  • When Andy first starting using cleats to ride his bike, he had a fall
  • He lends it to not being accustomed to cleats along with going to fast on a windy, sandy road by the beach
  • Vinnie saw it happen -- he fell in slow motion
  • For Andy, by the time he realized he would fall, it was too late
  • If you think you will slip in sand, look up and keep going

Vinnie Tortorich and Anna Vocino talk Amazon, proper ways to work out, hormones and steroids, and how to eat healthily on this Monday edition of the Angriest Trainer podcast.

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS

AMAZON WINNER OF THE WEEK

  • Lonnie Beauchamp winner bought a $700 infrared camera
  • To win, go through Vinnie's site to Amazon, buy something cool, and then write us about it!
  • You can enter the same thing for a few weeks because we only pick one winner a week
  • Lonnie pays for his phone calls even though Vinnie owes him one for the meet up in LA he held
    • Thank you to the Beauchamp bros for your support

SQUATS

  • Lonnie does too many squats, then quits for a month because he's in pain, and then has to start all over again
    • How can one prevent one's hamstrings from hurting too much?
  • Stabilize yourself and don't start with a bar for squats
  • In the gym, start with lunges, do light leg presses, let your legs get used to it
  • Take your time -- don't feel any pressure to push yourself too far

HCG DIET

  • There was a "diet" shot that made you less hungry and easier to gain muscle
  • Gonadotropin was taken from pregnant mares, and body builders used to do it but we could female-like breasts
  • HCG = human choieonic gonadotropin
  • This is not safe or effective
  • Consumers should stay clear of weight loss products with this in it

THYROID MEDICATION

  • You only take a little of porcine thyroid
  • This way, your body will still produce hormones that it needs to
  • Any hormone (steroid) that you take will make your body stop producing that hormone which is bad

WEIGHT LOSS AND FRUIT

  • Fruit is not the best to lose weight
  • By all means, eat it, eat berries, but fruit prevents weight loss if you have a poor metabolic system
  • Bananas and pineapples are such straight sugar
  • Vegetables are better!
  • Just be careful

ANNA'S ALLERGY TEST

  • Anna has been testing 180 foods to see what see is allergic to
  • She had no dairy, and now has gone back to it
    • she can now tell the difference between high and low quality dairy

BCAA

  • Branch chain amino acid
  • Breakdown of 4 different amino acids
  • Vinnie has prior worked with it
  • Building block in protein that helps your muscles build and recuperate faster

MG VITAMIN

  • New magnesium vitamin made of 3 different types of magnesium
  • Vinnie has been working on this for almost as long as the multivitamin
  • This is more expensive, but Vinnie will work it out

CELIAC AWARENESS

  • When Brain Grain, and Wheat Belly came out, people began to understand the health risk of gluten
  • Perlmutter even agrees
  • Restaurants are getting better too

Vinnie Tortorich answers listener questions from George Ramler concerning getting lean and fitness in general on today's Saturday edition of the Angriest Trainer podcast.

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSOR

HOW GEORGE FOUND VINNIE

  • George doesn't completely remember, however he is a big audiobook listener
  • He then found the podcast
  • George refers many people to both the book and the diet
  • He's a former football player (D3) but he wants to get lean like Vinnie which is part of the reason he follows Vinnie so seriously

HOW CAN A GUY LIKE GEORGE LEAN OUT BUT ALSO STAY BIG?

  • George was a tightend, 6'4", 225 lbs
    • He now weighs 245 and is in pretty good shape but wants to get lean
    • He wants to lose 15 lbs
  • In football, it was all about being big to stay safe
    • "Fear of smallness" after stopping playing football
    • Ex Football players have to accept that they will lose a little size (not muscle size, muscles can look bigger)
  • There are many guys who aren't in shape but are very strong, built
  • One must consider: Fit to do what?
  • Vinnie feels that George will still be as strong even if he were to lose 30 lbs

IF ONE IS CARRYING A BIG BODY AROUND, IS IT HARDER TO STAY HEALTHY LONG TERM?

  • It depends on one's BMI, not on one's sheer size
  • You can still live a long, successful life

COULD VINNIE EVER DO A MUSCLE UP?

  • A muscle up is where one does a pull up, pulls oneself over the bar, and dips
  • Vinnie could do this in college even when he weighed 230 lbs
  • Vinnie was in the gymnasium all the time as a physical education major so Vinnie could even do an Iron Cross

IF ONE WANTS TO LEAN OUT, DOES ONE NEED TO BE INCREDIBLY STRICT WITH THE DIET?

  • You do not need to be in ketosis
  • If you are eating veggies, some fruit, and meat, your body will pack on lean muscles
  • This will improve one's workout
  • You have to completely commit to this diet to achieve goals such as George's

An NSNG meet up where Vinnie goes to his fans may be on the horizon...

1
